Our mission and values

Brooklyn and Breukelen share a unique history that dates back to 1646, when the Breuckelen settlement was established, named after Breukelen in the Netherlands. The authorities on both sides believe that it is in their common interest to nurture and manage the unique historical ties between the two places. The Brooklyn Bridge Breukelen Foundation was established in 2010 to implement this.

Eric L. Adams, then Borough President of Brooklyn, New York, USA and Ap Reinders, Mayor of Stichtse Vecht Municipality, which also includes Breukelen, believe the agreement will further help develop friendly relations between the two communities.

In this context, activities are encouraged which are common to all and which can generate new initiatives to further stimulate social, cultural and economic relations.

The Breukelen-Brooklyn relationship aims to increase educational opportunities, cultural exchanges and economic development for both places and to make both municipalities aware of unique historical relationship. In both locations there will be events, joint activities and future programs based on friendship of mutual cooperation. Unity is strength!
