Brooklyn Adopts Brooklyn

Relief supplies after the war

The link between Brooklyn and Breukelen was revived in the 20th century. In 1927, the American journalist Marguerite Salomon discovered the village of Breukelen during a trip through Europe. Like many compatriots, she was fond of history and was thrilled at the idea of being in a village where her ancestors may have come from. Salomon organized a visit by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to Breukelen in 1929 and organized a large-scale fundraising campaign after the Second World War: 'Brooklyn adopts Breukelen, Holland'. She came to Breukelen herself in 1948 to carry out her own 'Marshall Aid' and to distribute the goods she had collected, such as clothing, gramophone records and food. She came over a few more times in the years that followed.
